British Citizenship & Naturalisation Application Support

Take the next step towards becoming a British citizen

British citizenship is an important milestone and, for many people, the final stage of their UK immigration journey.

The requirements depend on your individual circumstances and the basis on which you are applying. We provide clear, personalised advice to help you understand whether you qualify and guide you through the application process.

British Citizenship by Naturalisation

You may be able to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation if you are an adult and have Indefinite Leave to Remain, Indefinite Leave to Enter or settled status, subject to the applicable requirements.

For applicants who are not relying on marriage or civil partnership to a British citizen, the usual residence period is 5 years, and an applicant will normally need to have been free from immigration time restrictions for at least 12 months before applying. Different provisions apply to spouses and civil partners of British citizens.

Eligibility can involve consideration of your residence and absences from the UK, immigration history, English-language requirement, Life in the UK Test, good-character requirement and your status at the date of application.

Married to a British Citizen?

If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you may be able to apply for naturalisation once you have the required settled status, without normally having to wait a further 12 months.

Applicants under this route generally need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before applying and meet the applicable residence and other naturalisation requirements.

British Citizenship for Children

A child’s entitlement to British citizenship depends on factors including where and when they were born and their parents’ nationality or immigration status.

Being born in the UK does not, by itself, always mean that a child is automatically a British citizen. In some circumstances, a child who is not automatically British may be eligible to register as a British citizen.

We can assess your child’s circumstances and advise on the appropriate route to registration where available.

HOW WE CAN HELP

We can assist with:

  • Eligibility assessment before you apply

  • Reviewing your UK residence and absences

  • Checking your immigration history and settled status

  • Advising on the English-language and Life in the UK requirements

  • Reviewing matters relevant to the good-character requirement

  • Identifying the documents required for your application

  • Preparing and submitting your naturalisation or registration application

  • Supporting you throughout the application process

A CAREFUL REVIEW BEFORE YOU APPLY

Naturalisation is not simply an extension of your immigration permission. The Home Office considers a number of statutory and policy requirements, and the correct route depends on your individual circumstances.

We will review your circumstances before the application is prepared and explain any issues that may need to be addressed.

This is particularly important where there have been significant absences, previous immigration issues, criminal matters or other circumstances potentially relevant to eligibility or good character.

AFTER YOUR APPLICATION

Adult applicants who are successfully granted British citizenship will generally be required to attend a citizenship ceremony. The ceremony must normally be attended within three months of receiving the Home Office invitation.

The Home Office currently states that citizenship applications are usually decided within 6 months, although some applications can take longer.
